Which Foundation is Right or You?

Picking the perfect foundation makeup for your skin can be daunting if you don’t know what your doing.

The Best Coloured Foundation Will Disappear on Your Face

If you take anything at all away from this blog, remember this: the right foundation shade will disappear onto your skin. It won’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles or highlight large pores. It will lightly cover up any redness or unevenness but it will do so without being obvious. It will look like your natural skin tone. Don’t use darker foundations than your skin colour to get that tan, nothing looks worse EVER than the obvious foundation line. Use bronzer on top to bronze yourself up. Check out one of my other blog on Bronzer.

Test before you buy.
You should do this to see what looks best on your skin. Most colours actually look different out of the bottle so test test test!
Not only the colour but the thickness/lightness of it. Also whether you want a liquid, cream or powder.

Testing Out Different Shades

When testing out shades, it’s best to do this at the makeup counter or in the right light with a clean, fresh face.

The best shade for you is one that disappears on your face. To test, apply a stroke of up to three colors on your jawline (the inner wrist or hand aren’t the best spots, contrary to popular belief) try it on your face as you will be wearing it there! :)

The second shade from the left is the right one.. You can hardly see it!
Once you find that perfect fit, check it out in natural light. Ask to borrow a hand mirror and stand near a doorway, or step outside, to see which foundation looks best in the natural light.

What’s the Right Formula for Your Skin?

When choosing a foundation it’s best to try and know your skin type. Foundations are formulated for oily, dry, mature, normal, sensitive skin. Keep in mind that most your skin type changes with the weather. In winter, you might be dry, while in summer you might be oily. Also, lots of women actually have combination skin, which means they are oily in the T-zone and dry everywhere else.

If your skin is oily, look for words like “oil-free,” “oil-control” or “mattifying” on the bottle.

Women with dry skin should look for moisturizing foundations with “hydrating” or “moisture-rich” wording on the bottle. Foundations containing glycerin glide on easily.

For combination skin, determine if you’re more oily or dry and go from there. Cream-to-powder bases work great for combination skin. Mineral foundations work well on all skin types, especially sensitive skin.

Coverage: Do You Want Light, Medium or Heavy?

When choosing a foundation figure out the what coverage you want. This may also be seasonal. You may choose lighter coverage in summer and a heavier, creamier coverage in colder months. A SPF foundation would be great for summer too!

If you have good skin, but want to even out a few ruddy areas, consider a light coverage, tinted moisturizers or light powders. If your skin tone is uneven and you have blemishes, consider a medium-coverage foundation. Most medium-coverage foundations a liquid or a creme and can be built upon to create a heavier coverage.

Yellow Vs. Pink Shades?

If you read about foundations in any beauty book or magazine, you will likely read about yellow- and pink-based shades. Women with olive skin should use yellow-based foundations, which look most natural on all skin tones. Pink shades can be better for women with very fair skin.

Last of all if you are still baffled.  Why not pop in and see me and we could do a private makeup tutorial!  Give me a call.

Blush or Bronzer??? What do you use?

Let’s get ready!
First apply some primer then your regular foundation.  Now use a foundation colour to totally match your natural skin colour.. If you want a bit of the sun-kissed look or some colour to your cheeks.  This is where we would use blush or bronzer.
But which do you grab????  Your blush or your bronzer?

Tricky situation, right? You almost feel like you should use one or the other?  Or do you even own both?  Wowzez!! Break them rules!

But guess what! You can actually use both :)  But it must be down right.  Who likes that look of a orange face when used too much bronzer???  Not me!

Bad bronzing!

Here’s a super-quick guide to work out the colour your cheeks should be sporting.

If you want to look like you have been to Hawaii.

Go for a little bronzer. The brown pigments will give your skin that I’ve-just-spent-a-week-in-the-Caribbean glow and if you choose one with some shimmer in it, it will give your skin an instant hit of radiance.

Apply your bronzer under your cheekbones, around your jawline, by your hairline and on your nose and chin. Lightly dust some on your neck, chest and décolletage for good measure and to make it all look natural.   Do not over do this step… sometimes bronzer can go terribly wrong!

Good bronzing.

If you want to contour:

Reach for the bronzer or a darker foundation.  Powder or creme, but make sure its free from any shimmer or glitter. The natural hue will help bring out your angles while adding warmth to your face.

Starting at your temples by the top of your ears and draw a three and coming down just under the chin line. Apply the bronzer or creme in the hollows of your cheeks.  Blend blend blend into your foundation so there is no harsh lines.  You can also apply the colour on either side of the bridge of your nose and at your temples. Your skin will look fabulous after this!

The three rule.. (done in blue here.. just so you can see) :) This is where you should contour.

Rule of 3

If you want your skin to look ‘awake’:

Blush time! Pink and peach blushes will help give your skin a wonderfully natural flush that almost looks like you’ve run all the way to work.  (without doing it) hehe

The key to a great blush application is to keep the colour light and not too brightly pigmented, otherwise you’ll lose that natural look.  And it will turn clown like!

If your face is round or oval, apply your blush on your cheekbones up towards your ears as this will help lengthen your face and add definition. For longer faces, apply your blush on the apples of your cheeks and extend the colour horizontally towards your ears.

Great Blushing!

If you want an overall natural finish:

Use both!!  Wowzez… Who would have known. :)

Just make sure you don’t go overboard with how much you apply and make sure you blend the colour in properly.

Static cray cray hair!

Ok so my hair is looking pretty cray cray right now.

I’ve spend ages blowdrying my hair and as soon as I step outside and get a droplet of water on it, it goes completely frizzy!!!  So a beanie goes a long way… Not only keeps my head warm but hides frizzy hair..  But then I have static hair..  You know those bits of hair that just tend to stand upright..and just look wild! :)

orig

Dry, cold air often leads to statically electric hair. Whether it’s from brushing your hair after you blow-dry (don’t do it!) or your Winter hat, there are ways to fight this less-than-flattering hair dilemma, and they (almost) all have to do with hydrating to your hair.

Here are a few simple tips for eliminating static.

Hair treatments: Dry hair and dry Winter air are the perfect combination to create statically charged strands, so the added moisture will help stop the electric charge.
Add a mask to your hair routine.  If you have time leave it in for about 15 – 20 minutes.
This will add that moisture back to your hair that the cold dry winter has taken out.  Not only does your skin dry out in winter.. so does your hair!

Shampoo: Don’t do it so often. There are lot’s of reasons why not to shampoo your hair so often but skipping a shampoo can help prevent your hair from getting dried out, which leads to static and a lackluster mane — talk about a double whammy.

Leave in treatment or shine oil: Another way to add some moisture is to use a leave in treatment.  My absolute favorite is Sebastian Potion9.  This product is amazeballs. Its not cheap but its so worth it.  Not only does it act as a leave in treatment is has a slight hold to it and makes it really easy to style with.  Once you have dried your hair use a shine oil to smooth it out.

Don’t Brush!: The friction from your brush will lead to charged particles that cause static electricity.  In fact I never brush my hair…It just turns into a frizz ball.  However best brush to use is the Angel brush, especially made for antic static and de-tangling hair.

Keratin: Now this is the B all and end all of all treatments!  Its a de-frizzing treatment not straightening.  Keratin naturally occurs in your hair.. So you are just putting back in that is naturally there!  Read here to find out more about the Brazilian keratin we do at Esstudio.

Hope this helps chicks.

Tips on Age cheating!

720049-1_l

Want to learn how to cheat your age like Gwen?  Can you believe she is 42!  Amazeballs!

From your hands to your lashes and brows there are a multitude of small areas that will give away your age!

When cheating on your age, it’s important to pay attention to the small details.
We tend to forget about our hands when going in the sun or just out and about.  If you drive its usually this side that is worse!  The sun is the devil when it comes to aging.  Surely if I had know back in my school days I would have worn my gloves and hat when my school teachers bellowed at me to do so!

old handsSadly, the way to draw attention to your less-than-youthful-looking hands is to have a remarkably fresh face. The contrast immediately draws attention.   Your hands can tell your age more than your face these days! Check out Madge and Sarah.. YIKES!

Thankfully, it is reasonably easy to rejuvenate them. Age spots can be zapped away by Jax and her IPL machine. You will only need a couple of these to make your hands look 10 years younger!  IPL will not only remove the pigmentation it will also stimulate collagen and elastin and make your skin super soft!

Once you have the back of your hands looking younger, you may want to show off your fingers – not so easy when your nails are also showing the effects of ageing, including dryness and uneven surfaces like ridges and splits.

image1

Have a Deluxe mani that will exfoliate and moisturize your hands as well as your nails.  This will also fix the ridges by buffing them out and making your nails super smooth!  Clipping all the dry cuticles off will work wonders!

lash

Makeup – the trick is to appear as natural as possible and not too heavy on your eyes as this will highlight those wrinkles!  One of the latest craze is semi-permanent eyelash extensions. They will last providing you care for them properly, which includes brushing them and not using oil-based anything on your eyelids, you’ll still look great without any other eye make-up at all.  Its recommended to have regular 2 week infills to keep them looking perfect.  Check out our previous post on lashes!

Winged-eyebrows

Eyebrows – Sadly the hair does get less as we age!  One of my elderly clients quotes “the hair from my brows fell to my chin” haha. These days there are heaps of products out there that will help with this.  You can purchase products that actually can help your brows and lashes grow!  Then there is makeup to help.  Draw your brows in with a similar colour pencil while brushing with  a clean mascara brush at the same time.   This will help smooth out hard lines from the pencil.  You can also fill in with shadows.

So here are a few tips to help with aging… There are many many more too!  Why not come in for a facial and I can give you some tips!
