Skincare During Lockdown

The last few months have no doubt been an emotional roller-coaster ride of many changes and unknowns. In a matter of weeks, Australia was brought to a stand-still in our fight against the global Covid-19 Pandemic. The hairdressing industry was very fortunate to remain open for trade while others weren’t so lucky. Nails and Beauty were among the trades that had to shut shop and for Jax that meant pausing her beauty services for a while. Fortunately, our efforts have paid off and our daily tally of infections have remained low. Restrictions across the country are beginning to ease and we are pleased to announce that from June 1st, Esstudio is back on for all things beauty once again! We couldn’t be happier to be back.

With hygiene measures put into place and social distancing at play, you can now come in for that facial you’ve been needing and finally treat yourself! However, if you still feel unsafe to come into the salon, or you’re still stuck at home for whatever reason, we have come up with an easy 6 step facial you can do in the comfort of your own home! Jax and Elena show us exactly how it’s done.

Double Cleanse

The DIY Dermalogica Facial starts off with their double cleanse. Why Cleanse twice? Well you would be surprised at how much dirt and sebum is left on your face after only one wash! Fine particles from makeup, sunscreen and the pollutants in the air need to be broken down first before being washed off. Dermalogica have specially formulated two cleansers; one oil-based, to melt through waterproof makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum, and a water-based face wash that allows for deeper cleansing action without over-drying the skin.

Jax starts off her facial with the Pre-Cleanse, massaging the balm in circular motions into her skin. She then rinses the cleanser off with warm water before proceeding to use the Special Cleansing Gel. Repeat with the second cleanse, and you’re ready for the next step!

Rapid Reveal Peel

This is where the magic begins to happen! Dermalogica’s Rapid Reveal Peel is a professional grade chemical exfoliant that promotes cell renewal and firmer, smoother skin. It gently buffs away the dead skin and debris without over-drying the skin, diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A potent formula of Lactic acid, Phytoactive AHA extract and fermented Plant enzymes work to smooth, tighten and lift skin! Some of the natural active ingredients include: Pumpkin Fruit Enzyme and Rice Bran Extract which promote cell renewal, evening out the skin tone. The addition of Australian Caviar Lime Extract smooths and brightens skin for a more glowing and youthful complexion.

Each retail pack contains 10 applications (8-10 weeks worth) of the peel at $129. It is recommended that you start your regimen with a three day “kick-start phase” where you use 1 full tube once a day for three days before spacing it out to once a week.

Here, Jax squeezes out the full contents of the tube onto her fingertips before massaging the gel into her face, neck and decolletage in circular motions. She lets it activate for 3-7 minutes. Some tingling is normal during this step. Rinse with cool water after time is up, and pat dry.

Phyto Nature Firming Serum

Dermalogca’s Phyto Nature Firming Serum is a dual action formula that reduces the appearance of ageing and restores and preserves the nature of young skin. This Serum is powered by Biomimetic Peptides and Nature’s vast botanical plant-extracts to lift and firm skin. Hyaluronic Acid, Amazonian Camu Camu, Moroccan Rockrose and Madagascan Green Coffee Bean are among the luxury ingredients that will noticeably brighten and reduce the appearance of fine lines in the first application and smooth out wrinkles by the fourth! Jax, dispenses 2 pumps into her hand and mixes the 2 serums together before gently applying to her face.

Smoothing Cream

Dermalogica’s Smoothing Cream provides skin with 24 continuous hours of hydration. This cream also locks in any serums and treatments applied to the skin and serves as a barrier for environmental stresses such as sun exposure, dry wind and air. Use this cream as a primer underneath your makeup for a smooth, clean canvas! Elena applies the Smoothing Cream in sweeping upwards stroking motions to her face.

Biolumin-C Eye Serum

Loaded with Vitamin C, the Biolumin-C Eye Serum protects and vitalises the delicate eye area against ageing caused by environmental stresses and daily eye movement. This lightweight but potent formula firms and brightens skin around the eyes. Chia seed oil and Arjuna Tree Extract rich with poly-phenol, re-hydrate the skin, promoting elasticity and minimising the appearance of fine lines. The Tramella and Poria Mushrooms as well as micro-algae provide nutrients to the skin to lock in moisture and boost the skin’s natural brightness. Jax, finishes off her at home facial by rolling the eye serum gently under her eyes on her orbital bone.

Don’t forget to make this a relaxing pamper for yourself by putting on some zen music, or lighting your favourite scented candles! Maybe unwind before your facial with a hot bath and your favourite bath-bomb! Be sure to take your time massaging the products into your skin to boost blood-flow and tighten the skin and muscles!

…and that’s a wrap for Jax’s easy lockdown Facial! All of the products mentioned above are available at our online shop, or in store at our Chippendale salon, and soon at our Parramatta salon! Stay tuned for the release date! Remember that great skin starts from within! Make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day and eat quality, nutrient-rich foods! Stay safe, happy and healthy, and until next time!

Which Foundation is Right or You?

Picking the perfect foundation makeup for your skin can be daunting if you don’t know what your doing.

The Best Coloured Foundation Will Disappear on Your Face

If you take anything at all away from this blog, remember this: the right foundation shade will disappear onto your skin. It won’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles or highlight large pores. It will lightly cover up any redness or unevenness but it will do so without being obvious. It will look like your natural skin tone. Don’t use darker foundations than your skin colour to get that tan, nothing looks worse EVER than the obvious foundation line. Use bronzer on top to bronze yourself up. Check out one of my other blog on Bronzer.

Test before you buy.
You should do this to see what looks best on your skin. Most colours actually look different out of the bottle so test test test!
Not only the colour but the thickness/lightness of it. Also whether you want a liquid, cream or powder.

Testing Out Different Shades

When testing out shades, it’s best to do this at the makeup counter or in the right light with a clean, fresh face.

The best shade for you is one that disappears on your face. To test, apply a stroke of up to three colors on your jawline (the inner wrist or hand aren’t the best spots, contrary to popular belief) try it on your face as you will be wearing it there! 🙂

The second shade from the left is the right one.. You can hardly see it!
Once you find that perfect fit, check it out in natural light. Ask to borrow a hand mirror and stand near a doorway, or step outside, to see which foundation looks best in the natural light.

What’s the Right Formula for Your Skin?

When choosing a foundation it’s best to try and know your skin type. Foundations are formulated for oily, dry, mature, normal, sensitive skin. Keep in mind that most your skin type changes with the weather. In winter, you might be dry, while in summer you might be oily. Also, lots of women actually have combination skin, which means they are oily in the T-zone and dry everywhere else.

If your skin is oily, look for words like “oil-free,” “oil-control” or “mattifying” on the bottle.

Women with dry skin should look for moisturizing foundations with “hydrating” or “moisture-rich” wording on the bottle. Foundations containing glycerin glide on easily.

For combination skin, determine if you’re more oily or dry and go from there. Cream-to-powder bases work great for combination skin. Mineral foundations work well on all skin types, especially sensitive skin.

Coverage: Do You Want Light, Medium or Heavy?

When choosing a foundation figure out the what coverage you want. This may also be seasonal. You may choose lighter coverage in summer and a heavier, creamier coverage in colder months. A SPF foundation would be great for summer too!

If you have good skin, but want to even out a few ruddy areas, consider a light coverage, tinted moisturizers or light powders. If your skin tone is uneven and you have blemishes, consider a medium-coverage foundation. Most medium-coverage foundations a liquid or a creme and can be built upon to create a heavier coverage.

Yellow Vs. Pink Shades?

If you read about foundations in any beauty book or magazine, you will likely read about yellow- and pink-based shades. Women with olive skin should use yellow-based foundations, which look most natural on all skin tones. Pink shades can be better for women with very fair skin.

Blush or Bronzer??? What do you use?

Let’s get ready!
First apply some primer then your regular foundation.  Now use a foundation colour to totally match your natural skin colour.. If you want a bit of the sun-kissed look or some colour to your cheeks.  This is where we would use blush or bronzer.
But which do you grab????  Your blush or your bronzer?

Tricky situation, right? You almost feel like you should use one or the other?  Or do you even own both?  Wowzez!! Break them rules!

But guess what! You can actually use both 🙂  But it must be down right.  Who likes that look of a orange face when used too much bronzer???  Not me!

Bad bronzing!

Here’s a super-quick guide to work out the colour your cheeks should be sporting.

If you want to look like you have been to Hawaii.

Go for a little bronzer. The brown pigments will give your skin that I’ve-just-spent-a-week-in-the-Caribbean glow and if you choose one with some shimmer in it, it will give your skin an instant hit of radiance.

Apply your bronzer under your cheekbones, around your jawline, by your hairline and on your nose and chin. Lightly dust some on your neck, chest and décolletage for good measure and to make it all look natural.   Do not over do this step… sometimes bronzer can go terribly wrong!

Good bronzing.

If you want to contour:

Reach for the bronzer or a darker foundation.  Powder or creme, but make sure its free from any shimmer or glitter. The natural hue will help bring out your angles while adding warmth to your face.

Starting at your temples by the top of your ears and draw a three and coming down just under the chin line. Apply the bronzer or creme in the hollows of your cheeks.  Blend blend blend into your foundation so there is no harsh lines.  You can also apply the colour on either side of the bridge of your nose and at your temples. Your skin will look fabulous after this!

The three rule.. (done in blue here.. just so you can see) 🙂 This is where you should contour.

Rule of 3

If you want your skin to look ‘awake’:

Blush time! Pink and peach blushes will help give your skin a wonderfully natural flush that almost looks like you’ve run all the way to work.  (without doing it) hehe

The key to a great blush application is to keep the colour light and not too brightly pigmented, otherwise you’ll lose that natural look.  And it will turn clown like!

If your face is round or oval, apply your blush on your cheekbones up towards your ears as this will help lengthen your face and add definition. For longer faces, apply your blush on the apples of your cheeks and extend the colour horizontally towards your ears.

Great Blushing!

If you want an overall natural finish:

Use both!!  Wowzez… Who would have known. 🙂

Just make sure you don’t go overboard with how much you apply and make sure you blend the colour in properly.

Static cray cray hair!

Ok so my hair is looking pretty cray cray right now.

I’ve spend ages blowdrying my hair and as soon as I step outside and get a droplet of water on it, it goes completely frizzy!!!  So a beanie goes a long way… Not only keeps my head warm but hides frizzy hair..  But then I have static hair..  You know those bits of hair that just tend to stand upright..and just look wild! 🙂

Dry, cold air often leads to statically electric hair. Whether it’s from brushing your hair after you blow-dry (don’t do it!) or your Winter hat, there are ways to fight this less-than-flattering hair dilemma, and they (almost) all have to do with hydrating to your hair.

Here are a few simple tips for eliminating static.

Hair treatments: Dry hair and dry Winter air are the perfect combination to create statically charged strands, so the added moisture will help stop the electric charge.
Add a mask to your hair routine.  If you have time leave it in for about 15 – 20 minutes.
This will add that moisture back to your hair that the cold dry winter has taken out.  Not only does your skin dry out in winter.. so does your hair!

Shampoo: Don’t do it so often. There are lot’s of reasons why not to shampoo your hair so often but skipping a shampoo can help prevent your hair from getting dried out, which leads to static and a lackluster mane — talk about a double whammy.

Leave in treatment or shine oil: Another way to add some moisture is to use a leave in treatment.  My absolute favorite is Sebastian Potion9.  This product is amazeballs. Its not cheap but its so worth it.  Not only does it act as a leave in treatment is has a slight hold to it and makes it really easy to style with.  Once you have dried your hair use a shine oil to smooth it out.

Don’t Brush!: The friction from your brush will lead to charged particles that cause static electricity.  In fact I never brush my hair…It just turns into a frizz ball.  However best brush to use is the Angel brush, especially made for antic static and de-tangling hair.

Keratin: Now this is the B all and end all of all treatments!  Its a de-frizzing treatment not straightening.  Keratin naturally occurs in your hair.. So you are just putting back in that is naturally there!  Read here to find out more about the Brazilian keratin we do at Esstudio.

Hope this helps chicks.
