Are you aware of the potential dangers of your pretty named nail polish ?
With cute names like bubble bath or Strawberry shortcake,  are you blinded from the potential dangers of these polishes?  With some scary ingredients that are known cancer causing chemicals and those toxic to the nervous system.

The top three worst chemicals of concern are toluene, dibutyl phalate (dbp) and formaldehyde – the TOXIC TRIO.

DBP is now banned from cosmetics in the EU, but the other two are still allowed.
It is a commonly used to make plastic.  It is also used as an additive to adhesives or printing inks.  It is a suspected endocrine disruptor.  Meaning its bad for your hormones!

Toluene, a solvent and pain thinner, is a potent neurotoxicant ( toxic to the nervous system) that acts as an irritant, impairs breathing and causes nausea, according to EWG. It’s especially hazardous if your pregnant, as breathing in toluene vapours can harm your unborn baby.

Formaldehyde, on the other hand, is commonly found in nail-hardening formulas and is a known allergen classified as “carcinogenic to humans”.  We’ve all heard of formaldehyde.
I’ve had a few clients that have said their nail has fallen off using nail hardeners.  It is the main ingredient in hardeners. Formaldehyde is highly toxic to all animals, regardless of method of intake. Ingestion of 30 mL (1 oz.) of a solution containing 37% formaldehyde has been reported to cause death in an adult human.[28] Water solution of formaldehyde is very corrosive and its ingestion can cause severe injury to the upper gastrointestinal tract.  There is so many wrong things with Formaldehyde.

Fortunately, a number of beauty brands, including some mainstream ones, are now phasing out these chemicals, and are proudly 3 free already. A few have gone 4 and 5 by also excluding Formaldehyde resins from their formulas and / or camphor, a strong smelling plasticizer that can be an irritant in large amount.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE – FOUNDATION

spongebrushWhen it comes to applying your foundation you have three options – a foundation brush, a foundation sponge and your fingers. Let me start by telling you to avoid using your fingers at all costs. Using your hands to apply your foundation can mean losing up to 50% of the product on your hand. Not cool.

Then we have the foundation sponge. The Beauty Blender has taken the industry by storm because of its egg-shaped ‘no edges’ design. This leaves a perfectly airbrushed complexion behind. A tip to prevent your sponge from absorbing too much product is to wet the sponge down with water first and then squeeze it all out before dipping into your foundation.

A stippling brush is perfect for foundation. The brush is made up of shorter natural bristles and longer synthetic bristles. The dual-fiber brush is used for buffing and stippling foundation into your skin. To ‘stipple’ foundation for an airbrushed look, dip just the very tips of the bristles into your liquid foundation and gently press it into your skin.

CHOP SHOP

I don’t know if it’s the heat of the Aussie Summer or what, but lately the salon has been overrun with ladies looking to lop off their luscious locks. It’s a super easy way to beat the heat, cut styling time down by like a billion percent AND if you have Virgin Hair* that is 20cm or longer, you can donate your hair to organisations like Pantene  Beautiful Lengths to be made into a wig for women undergoing cancer treatment.

shorthair *Virgin Hair is hair that has not been coloured or chemically treated.

FA-BLUE-OUS

This nail art is really easy to achieve as long as you have some tape (even a Post-It will do) and some spare time to kill. Start with your typical base coat and two coats of colour – in this case white. Then wait 30 minutes or so for the white to dry before applying your tape in a triangle pattern – or if you’re super organised you can pant the white the night before. Apply one coat of light blue polish (Chanel’s Coco Blue) and after 10 seconds remove the tape. Wait another 10 minutes for the polish to dry before applying two new pieces of tape about 1mm further towards the free edge of the nail. Apply one coat of a darker blue polish (Chanel’s Blue Rebel). Once again, wait 10 seconds before peeling away the tape. Wait 15 minutes before applying tape another 1mm closer and then apply the metallic blue polish (Chanel’s Azure). Wait – you guessed it – another 10 seconds before removing the tape and then finish with a top coat!

If you don’t have this much time, but you have a steady hand and a striping brush handy then you can work from the inside out rather than the outside in. Start with your base coat and then two coats of white polish. Then paint the metallic blue triangle. After that you will need your striping brush to paint the two borders – first the darker blue and then the light blue. Finish with a top coat and Voila! Picture perfect nails!

If you don’t have the patience or just don’t trust yourself, pop by Esstudio Galleria and take advantage of our extensive range of Chanel polishes while we paint your nails to perfection!

GET LASHED – IT’S WAY MORE FUN THAN IT SOUNDS

Eyelash extensions are one of God’s greatest inventions. Forget about mascara. Forget about strip lashes. Forget about those pesky little cluster lashes. Eyelash extensions is where it’s at. The system works by isolating a single natural lash and then gluing a longer, thicker synthetic lash on top of it. The synthetic lashes are positioned approximately 1mm away from the eyelid to ensure that neither the lash nor the glue cause any irritation to the eye.

A full set of eyelash extensions will generally last for 4-6 weeks as they will fall out with your natural lash according to your natural lash cycle, however you can start having infills from 2 weeks onwards. A common myth is that the glue from the extensions makes all of your natural eyelashes fall out. This isn’t true at all. Once a full set of lash extensions grows out, your lashes will look shorter and sparser – but this is compared to the extensions which can be up to twice as long and twice as thick as your  lashes were to begin with. But be careful, if you start pulling at the extensions to try to pick them off, you may end up pulling your natural lash out too!

Maintenance is a super important part of having eyelash extensions. We always recommend that you use a disposable mascara wand to brush your lashes every morning when you wake up and after you shower at night. It’s also awesome if you start using an eyelash serum which strengthens and thickens your natural eyelashes, meaning that your extensions will last longer because it will extend the duration of each eyelash cycle. Also, you won’t need to wear mascara with your eyelash extensions, but if you do you should make sure that you use an oil-free mascara and a oil free eye makeup remover to cleanse the eye.

If eyelash extensions are something that you have always wanted to try but have never gotten around to doing, you should have a look at Esstudio’s latest offer – A full set of Eyelash Extensions plus a 2-Week Infill for only $100.
