August at Esstudio

Blink, and we’ve already passed the half-way mark of 2020! What a crazy year it’s been! While we are all trying our best to adjust to the new “normal”, we can’t forget the importance of a little breather every now and then. Whether it’s a simple cup of tea or a full-blown pamper session, Esstudio has you covered. With your health and safety in mind, we have also updated our measures, in line with current health advice from the Government. Stay tuned, because for the month of August, we have a few little treats to prepare you for the next season!

Staying Covid Safe

The Esstudio team has been closely monitoring the ongoing Coronavirus situation since the wake of the Pandemic back in March 2020. We have since registered both salons as Certified Covid Safe Businesses and have clear action plans and health measures in place.

We recently updated our salon health measures to match with NSW regulations:

  • The Covid-19 Questionnaire is still required to be filled out prior to booking an appointment. This consists of some short screening questions as well as other information on our measures.
  • Upon arrival, your temperature will be recorded. Between 36°C and 37.2°C is considered a healthy temperature.
  • Hand sanitiser, bins and tissues are located at the front desk and on all tables in the salon. Please sanitise your hands as you enter the salon and whenever you feel the need to, during your appointment.
  • You voted and we heard! Masks are once again required to be worn by both client and staff! Thank you to everyone who voted in the latest Instagram Poll.
  • All tools, product bottles and areas are periodically sanitised and stainless steel beauty tools are autoclaved after each use.
  • All towels, capes, bedding and treatment beds are washed and disinfected after each client.
  • Our magazines and lolly jar are still removed for hygiene reasons, so it would be wise to bring in your own entertainment and snacks!
  • Teas, waters and wines are still flowing in disposables!
  • Areas that are constantly touched (i.e. doorknobs, EFTPOS machines) will be sanitised throughout the day.
  • We encourage you guys to fill out a feedback form post-appointment. This is important as we get to hear what you guys have to say about what we need to work on, and what we are already doing well.

If you still feel unsafe to come into salon, our online shop has a number of home colour kits and all your favourite products, all delivered to your home. Get virtual support from our qualified stylists via zoom! At Esstudio, the ambience and experience of the salon is key.

Get into the Spring Spirit this August!

Who else is sick of this cold, dry (and sometimes rainy) winter?! I know I’m putting my hand up! Spring is upon us and to celebrate, we have some exciting offers to get you feeling fresh and fabulous in time for the warmer weather!

Renew your skin with 20% off Dermalogica Pro Power Peels this month!

Dermalogica has formulated this advanced system to help conquer the effects of ageing on your skin. As we age, our cell turnover rate dramatically slows, making way for unwanted skin issues such as acne, fine lines, wrinkles and hyper pigmentation. A chemical peel gently exfoliates the skin, aiding in the natural cell-turnover process and promoting natural collagen production! Everyone’s skin is different, so each peel is customised and tailored to suit your specific skin type and concerns! Choose from either the 30 min express power peel for a quick but effective treatment, or go for the full hour pro peel, which includes a mask and serum to soothe the skin and a complementary head and neck massage!

Bring a friend and save!

This month, we are celebrating our community. With all that has happened this past year, we have received nothing but support and encouragement from our community. We wouldn’t have made it this far without you guys. To celebrate and say thank you, we have something exciting planned for the month of August!

Bring in your friend/relative/significant other, and you will both receive 15% off your services!

Hurry! Offer is only valid during the month of August 2020!

So, come by and treat yourselves to a few hours of rest and relaxation with Esstudio this August! We all deserve to feel good.

Until next time, Love Esstudio xx

What do YOU think?

In the wake of the Coronavirus crisis that has unfolded in the past few months, we have been working hard to ensure that we can deliver the same Esstudio Experience we have been for the past 8 years. We implemented a questionnaire for you to fill out prior to booking an appointment to ensure your health and safely, as well as ours, during your visit. We would like to thank everyone for their participation as it has allowed us to appropriately assess the risks and your concerns regarding the crisis. We are now moving to stage 2 of our Covid-19 measures and will continually update them to keep up with this fast-evolving situation.

Last week, we asked you guys two important questions about your preferences in salon:

  • Do you feel it’s appropriate we require clients to wear masks ? (Masks and gloves will be provided regardless for your own comfort!)
  • what are your thoughts on chatting throughout your appointment?

Based on the results we gathered, we found that 70% of you don’t mind that we require you to wear masks and that most of you are fine with a chat in salon, as long as social distancing measures are in play. After deliberating with our team, we have decided to request that all clients should wear a mask when a stylist is in close proximity to them. This is usually when they are working on you. If you don’t have a mask, we can provide one, as well as sanitiser and gloves upon your arrival. Once you are waiting for your colour to process or for a stylist to start, you may have your mask off. As lockdown measures across Australia begin to ease, it’s important we do not get complacent with our health and safety measures to ensure our infection rate remains low, and that clients are staff remain safe and comfortable whilst in our salon.

We recommend that you bring your own entertainment (i.e. books, tablet, laptops etc.) if you have a long appointment with us, as our magazines and books have been removed for the time being for hygiene reasons. Wines and waters are still flowing in disposables as well. Please understand that these measures are not forever, but solely in place for your health and safety.

As mentioned in one of our previous blogs, we will continue to ask you guys about your preferences and opinions on the situation and what makes you comfortable in the salon. We will regularly update the questionnaire to keep up to date with the ever-changing situation to ensure that the Esstudio experience remains safe, happy, healthy and fun. We look forward to hearing from you guys in our next Questionnaire!

Love, Esstudio xx

Ensuring the Esstudio Experience.

Photography by Mark Bond (

Since the end of last year, Covid-19 has rocked the entire world and everyone is feeling it! Our hearts go out to everyone who is being affected by the devastating impact that the corona virus has on our communities. Thankfully in Australia, our curve is flattening and we have contained the infection relatively well. The Hairdressing industry has also been fortunate to remain open during this time and the Esstudio Team has made sure to take this opportunity to deliver an experience that is both safe and enjoyable at the same time.

We underwent a short pause of trade to gear up for what the next few months are going to throw at us. During that time our team worked tirelessly to revise the Esstudio Experience to suit the crazy world we live in today! We are back and ready to roll with some new measures in place to ensure you and our team are happy and healthy at all times!

As a measure to prevent the spread of Covid-19 we have also introduced a simple questionnaire that you will need to fill out prior to booking your appointment. You can make your booking online on our website at! Your answers are important to help us take the correct precautionary measures to ensure the protection of yourself and our staff.

The 2 most important questions include:

  • Have you returned from overseas or been in contact with someone who has returned from overseas within the last 14 days?
  • Have you had close contact with or cared for someone diagnosed with Covid-19 or experienced any cold or flu like symptoms in the last 14 days? (to include fever, cough, sore throat, respiratory illness or difficulty breathing)

Based on what you feel and suggest, we will always be working to improve the experience we can offer at Esstudio! We value your feedback and would love to hear what you all have to say! In future, we might ask some other questions to get to know what you guys enjoy! Questions 6-7 are more about what makes YOU feel comfortable within the salon during Covid-19!

  • Do you feel it’s appropriate we require clients to wear masks ? (Masks and gloves will be provided regardless for your own comfort!)
  • what are your thoughts on chatting throughout your appointment?

Now that you’ve made your booking and filled in your questionnaire, it’s time to head to your appointment! Here’s what an appointment with us will look like!

  • You will be welcomed in by one of our team. Hand sanitiser, gloves and masks will be available for your use at the front desk!
  • We will then sit you at a table with appropriate social distancing arrangements to ensure your safety. Only 7 clients are allowed to be in the salon at any one time!
  • Wines, teas and waters will still be flowing in picnic style disposables! No glass allowed at this festival!
  • Unfortunately Magazines have been removed for hygiene reasons but we still love a great chat behind our ninja masks!
  • Consultations will be done at a safe distance in accordance with the social distancing measures.
  • Basins and stations as well as all tools used will be periodically disinfected after each use.
  • Our staff will be wearing masks and gloves at all times and are required to wash their hands before and after each client!
  • Boogie down with us! Good music will still be pumping! We still love a laugh and enjoy catching up with you guys!
Wines are still flowing, music is still pumping and Onyx still loves giving out kisses!

Our focus has always been about our community and staying connected so during our break we have launched a new online shop! You can now browse through many of your favourite in salon products from the comfort of you own home. Can’t make it into the salon? We deliver personalised home care kits for all your hair and beauty needs straight to your door! We also offer free live support from our team for all your questions and queries!

We would like to thank everybody that has supported us through this crisis. We hope that everybody stays safe and healthy! See you soon!

Love, Esstudio xx

“If eyes are the window to the soul then eyelashes are…”  Would you believe curtains? …how drab!

Personally I think drapes sound better but even that falls short of just how brilliant professionally pimped eyelashes can be.

Whether you’re looking to add a little pizazz or boldly flutter your inner sex-kitten, even a little bit of eyelash can go a very long way.

  • Have you had enough of short, wispy eyelashes?
  • Do you find yourself lusting after other people’s long, voluminous eyelashes?
  • Wish you had sexy eyes with long, curvy lashes to flutter?
  • Are you over wearing that clumpy, thick mascara?
  • Want that “I woke up like this” look?

Well in case you’ve been hiding under a rock or hibernating somewhere I’m here to tell you that the answer you seek is now widely available and very easy to get.  All you have to do is make an appointment and lie the heck down.  You even get to close your eyes and have a little rest while your goddess eyelash dreams come true!

Eyelash lifts and eyelash extensions are now not only extremely popular but have advanced to a very high professional standard.  The advances in both the products and the techniques mean there’s a look for every eye, and it doesn’t have to be a scary experience.

Now before you rush out and get lashed there are some things you should know about eyelash extensions.  Here are some simple tips to get you in the know.

Classic Lash set

What type of eyelash extension is best?

There are different ways to perk up your peepers, some like to keep it a bit more al naturale with a lash lift and some like to take it straight to the top, enter extensions!

The Eyelash Lift

For the more al naturale the eyelash lift is the way to go, think perm for your lashes adding length, definition and of course, curl.  Everything about the eyelash lift is using your own eyelashes so there is nothing fake about it.  You can only work with what you’ve already got so you can’t go expecting a custom designed look, but you can expect more curly lashes and striking eyes.

Eyelash lifts work well with a tint for added effect and are the answer for someone looking for a low maintenance option.  You will definitely notice a difference to your lashes with this technique.

Natural Lash Lift

Eyelash Extensions

If you’re up for the real ‘peeper-popping’ look then getting eyelash extensions is a no-brainer.  You can pump up the volume for a dramatic, movie star look or keep it lighter with less and add a touch of sexy.

Eyelash extensions add the length and volume we paint on daily with our mascara but without the clumps!  Actually they can do a whole lot more than that and you can practically choose the end result.

As one would expect, eyelash extensions are available in different fibres and quality.

Synthetic/Acrylic Lashes

There’s the cheaper variety which are synthetic lashes.  Synthetic or acrylic lashes are thicker and courser in feel and have a shiny glossy look. They are more obvious when on the eye.  Although synthetic lashes are a strong fibre and hold the curl, they are not the most natural looking or best for the job. They also lack the staying power and don’t last as long on the natural lash meaning more regular infills. With new techniques and improvements in the lash industry this type of lash is being phased out in many of the top salons and lash/brow bars.

Silk Lashes

Silk lashes are lighter and more realistic and natural in appearance.  The silk lashes are man made silk fibres – natural silk is so delicate it would breakdown quickly and have little to no staying power when adhered to your own lashes.  The man-made silk lashes however, are very popular and give a lovely feathered appearance when applied.  They give a soft look over their synthetic counterpart.  Silk lashes can be used in what’s known as the ‘fanning’ technique (more on that later).

Faux Mink Lashes

Faux mink lashes are for those of us who are really after the upper end of lashing (Beyonce is famous for favouring mink eyelash extensions).  The faux mink is just that, a fibre that is made to look like mink fur.  It’s faux because who wants to be a part of animal cruelty, let alone having it adhered to your eyelashes!  Faux mink lashes are darker and glossier than the silk lashes and are more tapered at the ends adding a bit more drama to the end result.

How many options are there?

You can have eyelash extensions applied to achieve a variety of looks (think Jessica Rabbit, Betty Boop or Kim Kardashian) so it’s best to have an idea of just how long and thick you really want them, before you commit.  And don’t forget heavy, if you opt for the OTT dramatic look.  In most reputable salons or lash/brow bars the technician will insist on starting lighter to test the water – that’s wise folks!

Extensions are all adhered to your own lashes but there are different techniques

There is the ‘fanning’ technique’ (mentioned earlier) where bundles of 3 to 6 lashes in one are adhered to your own lashes creating a thick voluminous look. Depending on the result you are after they can be maxed out to a super dramatic look, like one for a special event, or even used to fill in natural gaps in your own lashes (for those who aren’t born with many lashes to start with).

The classic eyelash extension is when individual lashes are adhered to your own lashes, one by one.  This gives your eyes more volume and thicker lashes but with a very natural look.  You can use this style to create a cat eye effect with thicker, longer lashes on the outside of your eye or have them placed giving you a doll eyed look.

Half sets and full sets are a thing too – half sets being about 50 – 60 percent of your top lashes meaning a lighter end result.  Don’t be surprised at how much even a half set of extensions can change your look though.  Remember the difference a light slick of mascara can make.

The classic extension is a great starting place as you can always up the ante at your next appointment once you’re used to wearing extensions.

Mix it up with a ‘Hybrid’

If you like you can opt for the hybrid style and have a mix of the classic individual lash extension with fans interspersed to fill out any gaps in your lashes or to add a bit more volume or drama to the end result.  Not as dramatic or thick as the full fanning technique but more than the classic full set.

Who doesn’t love choices?!  But definitely a reason for finding a great technician and reputable salon.  Get it wrong and you’re up for wearing them for a few weeks or paying extra to have them removed.  Some of us don’t have the right natural lashes or  eyes to handle a full fanned voluminous look and a good, reputable technician wouldn’t apply them.  A bit like cosmetic surgery I suppose …I’m sure you get my drift!

How are eyelash lifts and extensions done?

Eyelash lifts are set using a solution like a perm. A mold is used on the eyelid and the eyelashes are curled up and over the curve of the mold where they are neatly separated.  First the perm solution is applied and then the setting solution.  It usually takes between 10 – 15 minutes for it to set the curl.  There are different sized molds for different results.

Eyelash extensions are more fiddly and take skill to apply properly.  Single individual lashes are dipped into an adhesive glue and then applied to your own lashes one by one (or the fans if you’re opting for that technique).  This is why it takes a while to get done, especially the first set.  You can expect it to take anywhere between 1 – 2 hours depending on whether you are getting a full set or half set and also the skill and experience of the therapist.  You might as well get comfy on the table and prepare for a little nap, good things take time!

The set up

How long will it last?

Eyelash Lift

The lift generally lasts longer than extensions at around an average of about 8 weeks.  Some people will get less mileage and some will get more (it really depends on the life cycle of your natural lashes) but the 8 week mark is about the standard time before needing another treatment.

Eyelash Extensions

Extensions must be maintained regularly with infills about every 3-4 weeks.  As your natural lashes fall out and grow the extensions will become thinner and over time a little bit messy or start to show gaps where they have fallen out with your natural lash cycle.

As with most things there are some things to be mindful of, or some cases where you should avoid having eyelash lifts and/or extensions done.

  • Allergic reactions to the glue are probably the most common problem experienced with eyelash extensions.  This can cause stinging, discomfort, itchiness, redness and swollen eyes.  If you feel any sort of discomfort you must have the lashes removed immediately.  The longer you leave them on the worse the effect will be on your eye.  This alone is a reason to do your research and make sure you start with a reputable salon and technician who know what they’re doing and use salon grade products that are safe
  • If you have had an allergy to the glue used in eyelash extensions previously then stay away from eyelash extensions in the future.  It is likely to recur.
  • If you are pregnant you might want to think about leaving it until after bub – the glue has chemicals in it and this might be something you’d prefer to avoid (it’s up to you)
  • If you have undergone any sort of eye surgery in the previous six weeks
  • If you have had an eyelash lift in the previous four to five weeks – wait at least six to eight weeks before you have another lift

Caring for your eyelash extensions

Like anything the better you care for your eyelashes the longer your results will last. There are definitely rules to follow if you want to get the best out of your pimped up lashes.  Here are the general maintenance tips.

  • Don’t get your eyelashes wet in the first 12 hours (24 hours is even better). Shower before you have them applied and then no swimming, showering or crying (seriously) for the day following.
  • Don’t rub your eyes or pull on your lashes – even if you just want to keep feeling how amazing they are, don’t!
  • Avoid using oil based eye makeup, especially eye makeup remover.  Remember no rubbing!
  • Give them a gentle brush every morning and night using a clean mascara brush (with no mascara on it), this prevents them from looking messy, much like brushing your hair.
  •  Get regular infills – the time is different for everyone but a good rule of thumb is to get infills every 3-4 weeks.
  • You can use mascara (if you REALLY insist) but don’t use waterproof mascara. You probably won’t need mascara if you have eyelash extensions.

Words from a pro

The best way to get the real low down on what to expect or what you really need to know is to talk to a professional.  I met with Jacqui Arnold (Jax), Head Beautician at Esstudio Galleria in Chippendale, Sydney.

Jax has been doing eyelash lifts and extensions for 6 years now and is an expert in the field, having trained with one Sydney’s best technicians in the trends early days.

Jax says: “I work predominantly with the classic and hybrid techniques because I prefer a more natural look for my clients.  I seem to attract clients who want to enhance their eye feature rather than have massive long lashes.  Sometimes I will use the hybrid technique to give a natural fuller look which helps with enhancing the eye.”

On caring for your new eye enhancements Jax says: “The most important thing is to care for them properly in the first 24 hours by keeping them dry.  Then for a longer life avoid any oil based eye makeup and don’t rub your eyes.”

Jax’s tip: “A gentle brush every morning and night helps to freshen them up, it won’t make them last longer but keeps them looking fresh between infills.”

BOOK NOW t&c Not to be used with any other discounted offer.

The bottom line is, if you want to take your eyes from good to great or great to freaking brilliant then get them pimped, you won’t be sorry.

Eyelash lifts are waaaaaayyy better than a slick of mascara and eyelash extensions are a total game changer.

Recycling @Esstudiogalleria

Recycling is becoming more and more important everyday, getting rid of toxic waste and reusing raw materials allows us to preserve the environment. Esstudio continues to work on ways to improve how we recycle and continue to find new ways we can help as a salon. Where Esstudio has begun recycling is through recycled furniture, foils, and working with Sustainable Salons.

Almost all the studio’s furniture is recycled from vintage and antique stores, Esstudio’s most unique piece is the famous chandelier in the centre of the salon, known as the heartbeat of the salon, Aleks found it at an antique shop in South America and believes it was the inspiration for the studio. Jax and Aleks used recycled furniture in the studio to not only build character, but by purchasing recycled furniture you are helping to preserve the rainforest where they take materials from to build new furniture.

When working in a salon you realise the amount of waste and money that goes into using aluminum foil in every individuals hair. Which is why Esstudio looked into reusable paper foils, these foils aren’t just any foils, Paper foils are 100% reusable made from mineral paper created from recycled industrial waste, and can be used again and again as they are rinsed, dried, and ready to go.

Sustainable Hair Salons is an organisation who rescues up to 95% of toxic resources within Salons, these resources include chemicals, hair, metals, paper, plastic, razors, tool. The company created separate bins which the salons use to separate these resources to then be collected on a fortnightly basis by Sustainable Salons, who find ways to use these for bettering the environment.

Some of the ways the recycling is transformed is plastic being recycled into outdoor furniture, or chemical which are normally tipped down the drain are collected and sent to recycling plants to then be transformed into recycled water. Director Aleks says“ At a salon almost everything goes to waste, even hair… if all it takes is for us to use different bins for what we are already throwing out, why not help where we can!”

Another huge part of their organisation is individuals  donating their hair to make wigs for those suffering from alopecia areata or cancer, taking 20cm ponytails contributes to making wigs for these brave people. Here at Esstudio we have a lot of individuals come in for the chop and love to  encourage people to donate their ponytails when coming in for a haircut as it goes to such a great cause!

A few weeks ago Luke came in and had this hair cut off to be donated, and the process was awesome!
